Syllogism is one of the most important topics of banking syllabus. Some students term it as a difficult and some as easy.

With the changing pattern of the banking examination, questions on syllogism too have changed. The old pattern of syllogism was working on driving conclusions from statements but now this way has been reversed. Reverse Syllogism is nothing but the new version of Syllogism in which the Conclusions are given and you have to find out which statements follow the conclusions.

Through this blog, PrepLadder brings to you the perfect strategy to solve reverse syllogism within seconds.

A very basic trick we would recommend here is to just stick on the previous knowledge about the topic. A student who is well known to the previous type of questions can do these type of questions as well.

Another thing we would recommend here is to be well adverse with the basics. The best of all methods to solve reverse syllogism is the elimination method. This method consists of eliminating the options step by step which is not the answer.

A step by step guide to solve these questions is as follows.

Identify the “Universal Negative” conclusion, then eliminate those options which do not have a single universal negative statement.

  • Check “Particular Negative” conclusion, then eliminate the option which also violates this condition.
  • Check “Universal Positive” conclusion, then eliminate the condition which also violates this condition.
  • Check “particular Positive” conclusion, then eliminate the option which also violates this condition.

The remaining option is your answer.

Now, let us go through some examples that will make your understanding better.

Examples Based on reverse Syllogism

Example 1.

Conclusion:

No table is chair

Some chair are bed.

Statements:

(A) All table are wood. No wood is bed. Some bed are iron. All iron are chair.

(B) Some table are wood. All wood are chair. Some chair bed.  All bed are iron.

(C) All wood are table. No chair is table. Some bed are chair. All bed are iron.

(D) Some chair are table. All chair are wood. Some table  are bed.  Some table are bed. All bed are iron.

(E) Some iron are table. Some table are chair. Some chair are wood. All wood are bed.

Solution:

Conclusion 1 is Universal negative or we can say it is disjoint set. The very first thing is to find out the option which has the statement following this conclusion. B, D and E have no negative statement. So these are not the answers.

A and c has negative statements. In C, the statement 2 and statement 3 depict the given conclusion. So, C is the answer. You may also check option A, but when you have got your answer, there is no use of wasting time on other options.

Example 2

Conclusion:

 No table is chair

Some injection are not bed.

Statements:

(A) All table are glass. Some glass are bed. Some bed are iron. All iron chair.

(B) Some table are glass. All glass are chair. Some chair are bed. All bed are iron.

(C) All glass are table. Some table are not chair. Some bed are chair. All bed are iron.

(D) Some chair are not table. Some chair are not glass. Some table are bed. Sll bed are iron.

(E) No iron is glass. All table are iron. All chair are glass. No glass is bed.

Solution:

In conclusions we can say that “No table is chair” and “Some chair are not bed”

Here we need to identify the option which has statements depicting “No table is chair”

Except option E, all options do not have any “Universal negative” statement. So our answer will be E.

Let’s check  option E.

As shown here that all table are iron, All chair are syrup and no iron is glass. So, no table is chair

All chair are glass and no glass is bed. So, no chair is bed which infers that some chair is not bed.

Example 3

Conclusion:

 All table are chair

Some bed are not iron

Statements:

(A) All tabe are glass. Some glass are bed. Some bed are chair. All iron are chair

(B) All table are glass. All glass are bed. Some table are not iron. All bed are chair.

(C) All glass are table. Some table are chair. Some bed are injection. All bed are iron.

(D) Some chair are not table. No chair are glass. No table are bed. All bed are iron.

(E) No table is glass. All glass are bed. All table are iron. All table are chair.

 Solution:

In this case there is no universal negative statement. Now we will first focus on Particular Negative statement.

There is no negative statement in A and C, so these options are eliminated.

In option D, last statement is  “ All bed are iron” which can’t be the answer.

Coming to options E and B

The last statement of E has already depicted the first conclusion, but there is no restriction on bed and iron. So this cannot be the answer.

After eliminating four options, we know that the remaining will be our answer which is B. Now lets check option for you to get sure.

We know “some table are not iron” means atleast on element of table is not iron.

In second diagram all table are bed, that means one element of bed will not be iron.

Example 4

Conclusion:

 Some toy are rubber

No rubber is tank

All tank are bottle

Statement:

(A) Some toy are not tank.  All cup are bottle. Some rubber are not tank. All tank are cup.

(B) Some rubber are toy. All rubber are bottle. Some rubber are not tank. All tanks are cup

(C) Some rubber are toy. Some toy are bottle. Some bottle are tank. No tank are rubber

(D) All rubber are bottle. All tank is toy. Some rubber are toy. All cup are rubber.

(E) All cup are bottle. No bottle is toy. All rubber are toy. All tank are cup.

 Solution:

Here conclusion 2 is universal negative type. So, we will first identify the options which have this type of statement.

Here we get to know that B,C and E are this type of statement, so options A and D are eliminated. In option B and c, statement “No tank is rubber” available. Let’s first see these both option.

In B there is no relation between tank and bottle so this option is also eliminated.

So answer is E, lets check it also.

From the above diagram it is clear that E is the answer.

We hope that the examples and the explanations provided above will help you to understand reverse syllogism better and will let you score full marks in the questions based on it. You can write your queries in the comment section provided below, they will be answered.
