PrepLadder: Sir, What are the major reasons why candidates are afraid of the Reasoning section?

Mr. Subhash: As per my experience, fresher candidates at the beginning of their preparation are usually apprehensive of the Reasoning section. This is primarily because they lack awareness of the Reasoning ability topics since they are at the starting point of their preparation. Reasoning Ability is the test of the candidate’s logical ability and problem solving skills. Further, the questions appear difficult and complex. But gradually through the preparation, the fear diminishes as the candidate practices more and more questions.

Practice is the sole driver which can help you to sail through this section.

PrepLadder: Sir, kindly suggest some tips on how to score 20+ (or even higher) in the Reasoning section?

Mr. Subhash

I know most of the candidates face difficulty in qualifying the Sectional cutoff of the Reasoning section. I am going to put forward the tips which would help you to score 20+ in the Reasoning Section with ease.

Here are Some Useful Tips:

I. Order of Attempt

The order of attempt has a significant impact on the overall performance in the section. Thereby, attempting the questions in the correct order is imperative. I am listing the ideal order of attempt as per my opinion:

First Attempt the Medium Difficulty level questions such as:

  • Syllogism
  • Inequality
  • Coding Decoding
  • Blood Relation
  • Miscellaneous

Attempt Time Consuming Difficult Questions at a Later Stage

  • Puzzle
  • Circular Seating Arrangement
  • Linear Arrangement

Try this sequence in a mock test. If you feel that solving complex questions in the beginning with a fresh mind works best for you then do that. However set a time limit for each block of questions.

II. Focus on Time Management

Make sure to learn Effective Time Management by attempting a large number of tests; both online and offline. Also, strive to reduce the time invested per question with each gradual attempt. Make sure not to devote too much time to any question while attempting the exam since there are less than 30 seconds per question.

III. Consistent Practice

Practice MCQs topic by topic in order to attain a grip over each topic. If you think that you can develop speed by practicing for 4-5 days then that won’t happen. Also, attempt topic-wise online tests to master each topic. Practice MCQs from different competitive books to get exposure to different variants of questions. Don’t restrict yourself to 1 or 2 types, stay prepared for the unexpected.

IV. Attempt Online Mock Tests

I think attempting Mock Tests is vital to securing a good score in the Reasoning section. Attempt a number of both Topic-wise and Sectional IBPS-PO Mock tests to master each topic of the Reasoning section. Also, analyze your performance after each attempt and strive to strengthen your weak areas. This is the only difference between taking a test offline and online. I always push the students I mentor to start practicing online. Identify your mistakes and strive to rectify them with each gradual attempt.

V. Go prepared with plan A and plan B

Plan out your minimum targeted attempt, the time to be devoted to the Reasoning section and per question. Setting a target would encourage you to accomplish it. Have a set strategy in mind- your plan A. But also have a plan B in case the reasoning section of IBPS-PO Prelims is very difficult and you have to attempt more questions of other sections.

Prepladder: Sir, what is your message to the Aspirants?

Mr. Subhash: My message to the Aspirants is to prepare with Focus and Concentration. Remain confident and keep calm.
