State Bank of India introduced some major changes in the pattern and level of the exams conducted in 2016 and IBPS too adopted it. In our previous post, we have mentioned the new questions asked in English section in IBPS-PO 2016. Now we have come up the latest pattern of questions in Reasoning section.

Through this blog we have, we will discuss the Reasoning section, how it’s level varied last year and what or what not to expect in this year.

NEW PATTERN IN REASONING SECTION

I. CODING DECODING

The pattern of coding-decoding saw a major change in IBPS-PO Mains exam last year. It is basically a modified version of sentence coding that is usually asked. If you have thoroughly practiced this topic, then the new pattern was not a problem. It was comparatively easy.

Further some variation in this topic can be expected in this topic in the upcoming exams in 2017.

Let us understand the new pattern with the help of some examples:-

Example 1:

In a certain code language,

Give solution for problem - #E4, $R3, *M7, @N8

Pure first sale great - @E4, $T5, #T5, *E4

Pet sensed ghostly form - *T3, $M4, @D6, #Y7

Spa guards picked flake - #S6, *D6, $E5, @A3

Q1. What is the code for ‘solution’?

(a) #E4

(b) $R3

(c) *M7

(d) @N8

(e) Cannot be determined

Ans- D

Every symbol represents the first letter of each word in the following manner

# - G

@ - S

$ - F

* - P

Every Letter in the code represents the last letter of the respective word.

Every number represents the total number of letters in the word.

Q2. Which of the following code can be coded for ‘FRIENDS’?

(a) #S7

(b) $R7

(c) $S7

(d) @S6

(e) Cannot be determined

Ans- C

Q3. What is the code for ‘search from page’?

(a) *E4 @H6 $M4

(b) $R3 *E4 @D5

(c) *M7 @H5 #E4

(d) @N8 $M4 @H5

(e) Cannot be determined

Ans- A

Q4. What is the code for ‘Gross’?

(a) #S5

(b) $S3

(c) *S7

(d) #N5

(e) Cannot be determined

Ans- A

Q5. What is the code for ‘Payment’?

(a) #T4

(b) $T7

(c) *T7

(d) @N7

(e) Cannot be determined

Ans- C

Example 2:  Study the information and answer the following questions:

In a certain code language

"Play game in bad" is written as ' 9 8 5 7'

 "Anu book at too" is written as  ' 9 7 3 5'

 "Anil of boy am" is written as ' 9 3 6 5'

" Bat car an to" is written as  ' 5 4 6 8'

Q1. What is the code for ‘Fly’ in the given code language?

(a)5

(b)6

(c)9

(d)7

(e)None of these

Ans- D

The code for all the word is sum of the place of the word in English alphabetical like-PLAY=16+12+1+25=54= 5+4=9..so Play is coded as=9..and so on.

fly= 6+12+25=43=7

Q2. What is the code for ‘Student’ in the given code language?

(a)9

(b)4

(c)8

(d)3

(e)None of these

Ans- B

student= 19+20+21+4+5+14+20=103=4

Q3. What may be the possible code for ‘Mat’ in the given code language?

(a)5

(b)9

(c)8

(d)7

(e)None of these

Ans- D

man= 13+1+20=34=7

II.SYLLOGISM

Syllogism pattern was completely changed last year. It is one of the major changes faced by students.

The new pattern questions had conclusions in the given statement and you had to identify the statements which are most logically followed by the given conclusions.

Let us understand the new pattern of Syllogism with the help of an Example:

Example 3:

Conclusion: Some phones are digital; some cameras are digital.

Statement 1: Some cameras are digital. Some cameras are phones.

Statement 2: No phone is a camera. All cameras are digital.

Statement 3: All phones are cameras. All digital are cameras.

Statement 4: No camera is a phone. Some phones are digital.

Statement 5: All digital are cameras. All cameras are phones.

Mark your answer as

  1. Only Statement 1 follows
  2. Only Statement 2 follows
  3. Only Statement 3 follows
  4. Only Statement 4 follows
  5. Only Statement 5 follows

Solution:

Conclusion:

Some phones are digital. (Condition 1)

Some cameras are digital. (Condition 2)

Statement 1:

Some cameras are digital. Some cameras are phones.

No relation is given in phones and digital. So some phones are digital (Condition 1) cannot be concluded

Statement 2:

No phone is a camera. All cameras are digital.

Again, no relation is given in phones and digital. So, some phones are digital (Condition 1) cannot be concluded.

Statement 3:

All phones are cameras. All digital are cameras.

No relation is given in phones and digital. So some phones are digital (Condition 1) cannot be concluded.

Statement 4:

No camera is a phone. Some phones are digital.

No relation between cameras and digital is given. So, we cannot conclude some cameras are digital (Condition 2).

Statement 5:

All digital are cameras. All cameras are phones.

We can conclude from the diagram that some phones are digital (Condition 1) and some cameras are digital (Condition 2).

Therefore, statement 5 is the correct option.

III. INEQUALITY

  • This topic experienced no change in the pattern, either in Prelims or Mains.
  • The Prelims had questions on direct inequalities in most of the bank exams. Also there were questions on coded inequalities in SBI-PO Mains.
  • So, we must prepare this topic thoroughly as scoring full marks in this topic is an additional bonus.

IV. DATA SUFFICIENCY

  • Data sufficiency questions were basically asked in the Mains examination.
  • The complexity of the questions was raised by providing 3 statements instead of 2 statements in the questions.
  • If you are thorough with the basic approach, then there is no need to worry.

V. PUZZLES & SEATING ARRANGEMENT

  • There was an increase in the level of these questions last year.
  • Major portion of the SBI-PO Prelims exam consisted of Puzzles & Seating Arrangement.
  • So, it is advised to practice more & more high level puzzles and seating arrangement so that you don’t face any difficulty in exam.
  • Practice seating arrangement in combination with blood relations and puzzles which involve 2-3 parameters.

VI. MISCELLANEOUS

  • Miscellaneous questions include Direction, Blood relation, Ranking, Apha-numeric series etc. These topics are usually covered in the Prelims phase.
  • There was a steep rise in the level of questions related to Blood relations and Direction. So, prepare them accordingly.

We have covered all the new type of questions asked in Reasoning section in 2016 & SBI-PO'17. We can expect similar type of questions in upcoming Bank exams in 2017 as well. But, it should be kept in mind while we prepare in new pattern of questions, we should not completely ignore the old pattern of questions as they are equally important.
