Jan 07, 2019

PrepLadder congratulates Dr. Biswas on clearing FMGE Dec 2018 exam. We wish him all the very best for his career and future ahead. In this exclusive interview with PrepLadder, he shares his plan that worked best for him to help score well in FMGE. Hello, please tell us something about yourself. Hello, I am Dr. Surya Biswas and I graduated from Tver State Medical University in June 2018. I scored 220 out of 300 in December 2018 session of FMGE. It was just a  dream come true to score 7th highest marks in FMGE.

What do you think is the correct approach to study for FMGE? Only MCQ's or Theory+MCQ's?

Theory + MCQs. One must strengthen the basics of any subject and then follow it by doing ample MCQs.

When should the preparation ideally be started?

Ideally speaking, the preparation starts when one enters medical school. The knowledge you keep accumulating over the years in medical school plus a dedicated exam-oriented preparation of about 5 to 6 months to consolidate that knowledge is sufficient to pass this exam.

Please list the books you studied for each subject.

I used the following theory+ MCQs books for my preparation:-
  • Basic Sciences Anatomy by Arvind Arora
  • Biochemistry by Rebecca James Perumcheril
  • Physiology by Soumen Manna
  • Pathology by Praveen Kumar and Vandana Puri
  • Pharmacology by Gobind Rai Garg
  • Microbiology by Rachna Chaurasia plus Kaplan Step 1 Lecture Notes
  • Ophthalmology by Sudha Seetharam
  • ENT by Manisha Budhiraja
  • Medicine by Deepak Marwah
  • Surgery by Amit Ashish
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology by Sakshi Arora Hans For Short Subjects I used Arvind Arora.

Have you attempted FMGE previously? If yes, what did you do different this year that lead to your success

No. This was my first attempt.

How big is the role of practice and revision while preparing for FMGE and how much time should be dedicated for it?

Practicing MCQs regularly and routinely is absolutely crucial starting from the initial days of exam-oriented preparation time. Revision should be started at least 45 days before exam. It is difficult to revise every subject in such a short period for first-timers but one has to push their limits and not loose temper and interest in the process.

Did PrepLadder play a part in your success? If yes, how?

Yes, PrepLadder played an important role in my preparation. I used to solve it's Daily Free Mcqs for the last 3 years and also the image-based questions. I also took the individual subject mini-tests and tests in the app which helped me to gauge my weak areas. Lastly, I took the two mock tests for FMGE conducted by Deepak Marwah and I scored 194 and 191 in them which helped me to boost my confidence.

Did you use a timetable/study plan to keep your preparation on track?

I made a study plan but could not stick to it at the end.

Were you a topper or a mediocre student during graduation?

I was one of the toppers during graduation.

List the most difficult and easiest subjects for you.

For me, the easiest subjects were Pathology, Biochemistry, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, and ENT. The difficult subjects were Anatomy (very difficult to retain some chapters), Medicine, Microbiology, and Pharmacology.

One mistake that you believe everyone must avoid while preparing for FMGE

One mistake everyone should avoid while preparing for FMGE is failing to revise what you've studied at last. So one must do a smart study and revise the same.
