Strategy to Crack CAT in First Attempt

Strategy to Crack CAT in First Attempt

Here are some of the most important strategies to crack the challenging CAT in the first attempt. However, these should be backed with strong determination and hard work.

#1 Know the CAT syllabus well

Half of the battle is already won once you are well aware of the CAT syllabus and its important topics that should be studied on priority. Though IIMs does not prescribe any specific syllabus for CAT, it is advisable to go through the past year CAT question papers to get an idea of the syllabus. Based on them, one gets to know the topics and sub-topics from which the questions are frequently asked. Hence, it is crucial to go through the CAT syllabus and start your preparation from the basics.

#2 Make a section-wise preparation strategy

Once you are thoroughly aware of the syllabus, start your preparation section-wise. Make a well-planned strategy for covering each section. You can refer to the tips given below for the effective preparation of each section.

Preparation for Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC):

This section has mainly four components namely Vocabulary, Grammar, Verbal Ability, and Reading Comprehension. Each section demands a different way for its preparation. Students should inculcate the habit of reading newspapers and novels to prepare for the Reading Comprehension part. For the Vocabulary and Grammar part, students should go for a good book for regular practice of both and should practice lots of questions based on verbal reasoning as well.

Preparation of Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) section:

DILR is considered to be a game-changer and the most unpredictable section in the CAT examination. It assesses a candidate’s ability in problem-solving. To master this section, one should understand and master the basic concepts. Candidates should regularly practice lots of questions based on the topics ranging from arrangements, puzzles, Venn diagrams, logical reasoning questions to line charts, pie charts, bar charts etc. to have a strong grasp and better concept clarification.

Preparation for Quantitative Aptitude (QA) Section:

This section is one of the most crucial segments of the CAT examination. It aims to test the candidate’s understanding of numerical ability, mathematical skills, and problem-solving skills. In general, the questions in the QA section of the CAT are related to elementary mathematics. Hence, a candidate should practice questions based on Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry.

#3 Focus on your Fundamentals and Concepts

To crack CAT in the first attempt, it is essential to lay a strong foundation for its preparation. It can be only done if your basics are strong. While you prepare for each section, make sure to learn the basics concepts first and then move towards the difficult ones. You can not expect to solve complex problems if you don’t have a basic understanding of the basic concepts and principles.

Make a list of all the important formulas that are frequently used in CAT exam preparation. Memorize and refer to them whenever you are stuck in any problem.

#4 Take Mock Tests frequently

You can’t expect to win CAT if you are not taking enough Mock Tests. Not only do the mock tests portray the real picture of your preparation status, but they also help you identify your weak areas. The number of mock tests attempted during CAT exam preparation is directly proportional to scoring good marks in CAT.

The most important advantage CAT aspirant get by solving mock test papers is, they get familiar with the style and scope of the question paper. Apart from that, mock test papers also help with time management. CAT is lengthy and finishing it on time is a challenge for students, thus mock test papers help in keeping a track of time while attempting exams which in itself is the half work done.

#5 Analyze yourself

Don’t assume that just taking mock tests will help you to prepare better. Analyzing your performance in the mock tests is what makes the real difference. It is recommended to analyze your performance in the mock tests, as you can recognize your weak areas. Leave no stone unturned to work on your weaknesses and turn them into strengths.

Make sure you go the extra mile in self-analysis, which would certainly affect your scores and rank in CAT for the better.
