There is no doubt about the fact that FMGE is one of the toughest milestones for doctors who graduated from foreign medical institutions and now wish to practice in India.
As you already must be aware that the exam has around 300 questions spread across 19 subjects. Now such a vast syllabus demands determination and a strategy that is designed specifically to maximise your preparation time. And based on the history, the pass percentage has been relatively low. This brings us to the fact that students cannot afford to prepare in a scattered way.
We bring to you one of the smartest approaches to crack FMGE. You must focus on high-weightage subjects first and they contribute a large portion of marks in the exam. If you can conquer them early, you are sure to boost your confidence, build a strong foundation, and ace the exam like a pro.
In this blog, we are going to talk about everything there is to know about tackling the high weightage subjects. Let’s dive straight in.
Not all subjects carry the same weight in FMGE. Medicine, Surgery, Pharmacology, Pathology, and Community Medicine (PSM) are heavier contributors compared to others. By tackling these subjects first, you ensure that the hours you put in give you the maximum score payoff.
Finishing bulky subjects early builds momentum. Once you are confident in Medicine or Surgery, the smaller subjects like ENT or Ophthalmology feel less overwhelming. This psychological boost is very important when you are preparing for such a high-stakes exam.
Many students postpone big subjects till the end, only to run out of time. This leads to last-minute panic and incomplete preparation. Covering them first ensures that you don’t miss out on the major portion of the paper.
Here’s a rough distribution of marks based on past patterns:
From this, it’s clear that Medicine, Surgery, PSM, Pathology, and Pharmacology together make up a huge portion of the exam.
Begin with Medicine and Surgery, the backbone of FMGE. Prioritize core systems like cardiovascular, respiratory, CNS, trauma, and GI disorders. Focus on clinical scenarios, as FMGE questions test application more than theory.
With around 30 questions, PSM is a scoring subject. Cover epidemiology, biostatistics, screening tests, national health programs, vaccination schedules, and recent health guidelines. Since these topics are fact-heavy, frequent revision is key.
Pathology bridges preclinical and clinical concepts. Focus on hematology, systemic pathology, and immunopathology. Pharmacology is crucial for drug-based questions; give attention to antimicrobials, ANS drugs, cardiovascular drugs, and chemotherapy.
Together, OBG and Pediatrics carry nearly 40 marks. For OBG, concentrate on obstetric complications, gynecology cancers, and contraception. For Pediatrics, focus on growth & development, vaccines, neonatal care, and emergencies.
Subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry carry fewer marks but still appear in the paper. Instead of spending weeks, link them with clinical topics—for example, neuroanatomy with CNS Medicine or cardiovascular physiology with Medicine.
Clearing FMGE 2025 is not about studying everything in equal depth — it’s about studying smart. By focusing first on high-weightage subjects like Medicine, Surgery, PSM, Pathology, and Pharmacology, you cover more than half the paper with confidence. Once these are strong, the smaller subjects can be revised more effectively.
With consistent practice, smart time management, and regular revision, you can turn this challenging exam into a stepping stone for your medical career in India. Remember — success in FMGE doesn’t come from studying harder alone, but from preparing strategically and making every hour count.
