Group of Ministers to investigate National Medical Commission bill

The Centre has constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) under the leadership of Finance Minister, Sh. Arun Jaitley to investigate into the issues raised by some states and stakeholders over the draft ‘National Medical Commission Bill 2016’. The bill seeks to substitute the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a new commission to steer Medical education in the nation. The Centre has constituted a GoM under the leadership of Finance Minister, Sh. Arun Jaitley to investigate into the concerns raised by some states and doctors on the draft National Medical Commission Bill (NMC) 2016’. A senior government official stated that the GoM will have a meeting on March 20th 2017 and will submit its report in a course of 15 days. The official further added that the draft National Medical Commission Bill (NMC) 2016 will be placed before the Cabinet post the submission of report by the GoM. A high-level committee under the leadership of Niti Aayog Vice-Chairman ‘Arvind Panagariya‘ investigated into the issue of poor rules of Medical Education by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and proposed substituting it with a new commission last year. The panel comprised ‘P K Mishra’, Prime Ministers Additional Principal Secretary, ‘Amitabh Kant’, Niti Aayog CEO, Union Health Secretary and Panagariya. National Medical Commission will now emerge as the chief regulatory body and will take over all roles and responsibilities of MCI after approval. The new body will comprise eminent doctors and experts from related fields to steer medical education in the nation with a view to ensure that the quality of Medical Education in the nation is at par with the Global standards. A Parliamentary committee had called for revamp of MCI last year on the grounds that it has failed in its role as a regulator that has led to a downfall in India’s Medical Education system.
