Delayed Ejaculation: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment & More
Nov 29, 2023

A prolonged sexual stimulation is necessary for males with delayed ejaculation, sometimes referred to as impaired ejaculation, to reach their sexual climax and ejaculate (release semen from the penis). There are guys who are utterly unable to ejaculate because they have delayed ejaculation.
Delays in ejaculation could be temporary or long-lasting. Delay in ejaculation can be brought on by a number of chronic medical conditions, surgeries, and medication adverse effects. The therapy is based on the underlying cause of delayed ejaculation.
Men naturally ejaculate later some times than others. Delayed ejaculation should only be taken seriously when it becomes bothersome to you or your partner.
Causes Of Delayed Ejaculation
Delays in ejaculation can be brought on by medication, some chronic medical conditions, and surgical operations. On the other hand, drug misuse or mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, or stress could be the reason. It is often the result of a combination of mental health and physical problems.
The following are some psychological explanations for delayed ejaculation:
- Depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions
- Relationship problems resulting from conflict, poor communication, or other problems
- Performance anxiety; unfavourable body perception
- Taboos in the community or faith
- Gaps in the realities of having sex with a partner and sexual fantasies
Drugs and other substances listed below have the potential to cause delayed ejaculation:
- A few drugs for depression
- Several medications treat hypertension
- Certain diuretics
- A few antipsychotic medications
- Some anti-seizure medications

Symptoms Of Delayed Ejaculation
An orgasm and ejaculation require 30 minutes or more of sexual stimulation for some men who suffer delayed ejaculation. An ejaculatory reaction (anejaculation) may not occur at all in some males.
Still, it is impossible to diagnose delayed ejaculation at a certain time. On the other side, you are probably experiencing delayed ejaculation if the delay is causing you to feel nervous or upset, or if you have to stop the sexual activity because you are too exhausted, agitated, or because your partner requests it.
Having an orgasm during sex or other sexual activities with a partner can often be difficult for men. Some men can only ejaculate when they are masturbating.
There are various types of delayed ejaculation based on symptoms:
- Lifetime vs acquired: Ejaculation is a problem as soon as a person achieves sexual maturity when it is lifelong delayed. After a period of normal sexual function, acquired delayed ejaculation occurs.
- Particular versus general: Generalised delayed ejaculation is not caused by any particular sex partner or kind of stimulation. Situational delayed ejaculation is limited to particular circumstances.
- These categories help determine the appropriate course of action and a potential underlying cause.
Risk Factors Of Delayed Ejaculation
There are several factors that can make you more likely to experience delayed ejaculation, such as:
- Older age: It's common for males to experience prolonged ejaculation times as they age.
- Psychological disorders like anxiety or depression
- Health issues like multiple sclerosis and diabetes
- Some medical procedures, like prostate surgery
- Drugs, especially diuretics, high-blood pressure drugs, and some antidepressants
- Relationship issues, such not communicating well with your spouse
- excessive drinking, particularly if you've been a heavy drinker for a long time
Diagnosis Of Delayed Ejaculation
If therapy advice for delayed ejaculation is to be made, a physical examination and medical history may be sufficient. However, if delayed ejaculation appears to be the result of an underlying problem that would need to be treated, you might wish to be further tested or see a doctor.
Examinations for underlying problems could include:
- Physical assessment: Your penis and testicles may need to be examined closely for this. The doctor will lightly touch your genitalia to make sure you have normal sensation in them.
- Blood tests: Your doctor may take blood and send it to a laboratory to check for signs of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, low testosterone, and other health problems.
- Urine testing (urinalysis): Urine tests are used to screen for diabetes, infections, and other underlying medical conditions.

Treatment Of Delayed Ejaculation
Depending on the underlying cause, treatment for delayed ejaculation may include modifying or adding to your current medication regimen, getting psychological therapy, addressing alcohol or illicit drug use, or any combination of these.
Drugs
If medicines are causing delayed ejaculation, you may be able to remedy the issue by reducing the dosage or switching to a different medication. Sometimes adding a medication can be beneficial.
There isn't yet a drug that has been approved specifically to treat delayed ejaculation. Most drugs that are prescribed for other conditions are also used to treat delayed ejaculation.
Sometimes, the following drugs are used to treat delayed ejaculation:
The medicine amantadine for Parkinson's disease
- Buspirone is an anti-anxiety medication.
- Cyproheptadine, an allergy medication
- Psychology counselling (psychotherapy)
Psychotherapy can be useful in treating underlying mental health conditions like depression or anxiety that are causing delayed ejaculation. Additionally, it is used to address psychological issues that directly affect ejaculation.
A psychologist or mental health counsellor may see a client alone or as a pair for counselling. Depending on the underlying problem, you might find that seeing a sex therapist, a mental health specialist who specialises in talk therapy for sexual issues is the most helpful course of action. What type of counselling is best for you will depend on your unique problems.
