Over a month, skin cells grow and shed. Psoriasis sufferers see an acceleration of this process to a couple of days. When skin cells build up on the skin's surface instead of being shed, it can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as raised plaques, scaling, swelling, redness, or discoloration.

Furthermore, certain psoriasis medications work by reducing inflammation. These include topical corticosteroids, oral medications, and injectable biologics.
Each person with psoriasis is different. Some people will require more intensive treatment than others.

Eating a nutritionally balanced diet
Systemic inflammation is significantly influenced by food. According to research, there are specific eating behaviors that might aggravate psoriasis symptoms and increase the risk of developing the condition.
The definition of a healthy diet varies from person to person. However, the steps outlined below might help someone make one:
- Foods that cause inflammation should be avoided since they can make psoriasis symptoms worse. Some foods and beverages include substances that cause inflammation. Two examples of highly processed foods include soda and candies, processed meat products, and salty snacks.
- Consuming an anti-inflammatory diet: Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and other nutrient-dense meals consistently reduce the symptoms of psoriasis. In a 2018 study, for example, 35,735 people—35,571 of whom had psoriasis—were found to have less severe psoriasis than those who did not follow a Mediterranean-style diet.
Maintaining a healthy weight
Obesity is one risk factor that might lead to psoriasis. Those who are overweight or obese may also have psoriasis, and their symptoms may be more severe than those of people with a moderate weight.
Reducing weight can help persons who are overweight reduce inflammatory markers and relieve psoriasis symptoms.
A 2020 study found that following a 10-week treatment that lowered body weight by 12%, psoriasis patients who also happened to be overweight or obese had a 50–75% reduction in the severity of their psoriasis. Participants shed twenty-three pounds on average.
Developing additional healthy practices
Several practices, such as the ones listed below, can improve psoriasis symptoms and reduce inflammation:
- Avoiding or quitting smoking: Smoking is bad for your health and makes inflammatory diseases like psoriasis worse.
- Reducing alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol consumption can aggravate psoriasis symptoms and lead to inflammation.
- Staying engaged: Reducing prolonged periods of sitting could potentially alleviate psoriasis symptoms. An analysis of research indicates that sedentary lifestyles cause psoriasis sufferers to experience more severe symptoms than those who engage in regular exercise.
- Getting adequate sleep is important since sleep loss can make the body more prone to inflammation. Studies show that insufficient or irregular sleep patterns can increase blood levels of inflammatory markers. Experts recommend that people sleep for seven to nine hours each night to maintain optimal health.
- Reducing stress: Stress for extended periods stimulates the immune system, which results in a pro-inflammatory state. Eighty-eight percent of people with psoriasis claim that stress is the cause of their symptoms. Engaging in stress-reduction techniques such as yoga and meditation may prove advantageous.
