NEET PG Eligibility Criteria—All You Need to Know
May 20, 2025

NEET PG is just not another competitive exam. Its significance goes way beyond that. It is the most crucial step toward the career of a medical graduate student. Whether you are preparing for an MD, MS or PG Diploma course, NEET PG is the easiest and the most convenient way to postgraduate medical education.
Thousands of aspirants across India devote months and give their best for the exam. However, they forget about the most significant step i.e. understanding eligibility.
Before you extensively start preparing for the exam, diving right into the strategy sessions and revision plans, it is necessary to ensure that you’re qualified to take the exam in the first place.
Once that gets out of the way, there are a lot of other things that you must know about NEET PG Eligibility Criteria. And, to make it easier for you, we have written this blog to offer you with the utmost clarity.
Without further ado, let’s dive straight in.

Who Can Apply for NEET PG/ NEET PG Eligibility Criteria ?
At its core, NEET PG is open to MBBS graduates from recognized institutions. However, this simple statement has multiple layers. To be considered eligible, candidates must hold an MBBS degree or a provisional pass certificate approved by either the Medical Council of India (MCI) or the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The issuing institution must be an officially recognized medical college, and your degree must qualify you to practice medicine in India. Along with your degree, you also need a permanent or provisional registration certificate from either the NMC, MCI, or your respective State Medical Council.
Internship Completion: A Non-Negotiable Requirement
One of the most common reasons candidates are rejected is due to incomplete internships. As per the NEET PG 2025 eligibility standards, your Compulsory Rotating Residential Internship (CRRI) must be completed on or before March 31, 2025. Even a one-day delay in internship completion renders you ineligible for that year’s exam.
This condition ensures that all candidates are equipped with adequate hands-on clinical exposure before they enter postgraduate studies. If you are currently undergoing your internship, make sure your completion date falls within the prescribed window before you apply.
Registration Certificates
You cannot apply for NEET PG without a valid registration certificate. This document serves as official proof that your qualification is recognized and that you are licensed to practice in India. Whether it’s a provisional or permanent certificate, it must be issued by the MCI, NMC, or your State Medical Council. This requirement applies to both Indian graduates and foreign medical graduates (FMGs).
NEET PG Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)
Candidates who have obtained their primary medical qualifications from institutions outside India must:
- FMGE Qualification: Successfully passed the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) conducted by NBEMS.
- Registration: Obtain a provisional or permanent registration certificate from the NMC/MCI or SMC.
- Internship: Complete a one-year internship in India by July 31, 2025.
- Documentation: Present the FMGE pass certificate and internship completion certificate during the application process.

Eligibility for Foreign Nationals
Foreign nationals seeking admission through NEET PG must:
- Medical Registration: Be registered with the competent authority in their respective countries.
- Temporary Registration: Obtain temporary registration from the NMC, which is valid for the duration of the postgraduate course and limited to the institution where admission is sought.
- Security Clearance: Secure necessary approvals from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, if required.
Eligibility for Various Quota Seats
NEET PG scores are utilized for admissions to:
- All India 50% Quota Seats: Open to candidates from all states, except those from Jammu & Kashmir, unless nominated by the Government of India.
- State Quota Seats: Candidates must fulfill domicile criteria as specified by respective state authorities.
- Private Medical Colleges and Deemed Universities: Eligibility criteria may vary; candidates should consult individual institutions.
- Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS): Subject to additional eligibility conditions, including medical fitness and service obligations.
Is There an Age Limit for NEET PG?
No. NEET PG has no upper age limit, which makes it uniquely inclusive. Whether you’re a fresh graduate or someone who took a career break and is now looking to return to academics, you can attempt NEET PG as long as your qualifications and internship are in order.
This flexibility empowers a wide range of aspirants—from newly minted doctors to experienced practitioners aiming for specialization.
Number of Attempts: Unlimited Opportunities
Another good news—there’s no cap on how many times you can attempt NEET PG. You can try once, twice, or as many times as needed, provided your documents and eligibility remain intact.
This open policy allows candidates to improve their preparation year after year without the added burden of a restricted attempt count.
Reservation Criteria
NEET PG 2025 follows the reservation policy as mandated by the Government of India:
- Scheduled Castes (SC): 15%
- Scheduled Tribes (ST): 7.5%
- Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL): 27%
