In this exclusive interview with PrepLadder, Dr. Aashir shares the plan that worked for him and helped him achieve this massive success.

Hello, please tell us something about yourself.

Hi my name is Dr. Aashir Kaul. I passed my MBBS from AIIMS New Delhi and secured AIR 5 in AIIMS PG Nov 2016 and AIR 1 in Nov PGI 2016.

What do you think is the correct approach to study for AIIMS PG and PGI? Only MCQ's or Theory+MCQ's?

Well, to be honest I feel reading your basic subject textbooks is the best way to achieve a good rank as far as AIIMS PG and PGI are concerned. Of course practicing the previous year paper questions is important too as it gives one an idea about the pattern and topics being asked but only doing MCQs isn’t something one should solely rely on.

When should the preparation ideally be started?

The preparation for PG isn’t a one or a two-year process. I think focusing on your MBBS curriculum from day one should be emphasized. A more targeted approach may be started in final year/internship.

Please list the books you studied for each subject.

Anatomy: Grays anatomy Biochemistry: Harper Physiology: Ganong Pathology: Robbins Microbiology: Ananthnarayan Pharmacology: KD tripathi OBG: Dutta Peadiatrics: Ghai Medicine: Harrison / Davidson Surgery: Bailey PSM: Parks

Have you attempted PGMEE previously? If yes, what did you do different this year that lead to your success

This was my 1st attempt.

How big is the role of practice and revision while preparing for PGMEE and how much time should be dedicated for it?

You should dedicate at least 45 to 50 days for revision prior to your exam. It is important in such a way that it helps you to consolidate whatever you have read up till then and improves your ability to recall during exam.

Did PrepLadder play a part in your success? If yes, how?

Prepladder indeed helped me a lot by giving me a real idea about the level of competition in PG exams. I was also able to recognize my weak areas and improve them, it is through this portal that I could derive inspiration as well as valuable advice that helped me secure a good rank. Thanks a lot.

Did you use a time table/study plan to keep your preparation on track?

It is always good to have time bound goals so that your preparation becomes more objective. It helps to increase your efficiency. Reading random topics without order would be way too haphazard.

Were you a topper or a mediocre student during MBBS?

I never topped any of my professional MBBS exams. But I had been in the top 10 of my class.

List the most difficult and easiest subjects for you.

I found anatomy and ophthalmology really challenging. Surgery was my favorite since UG days. I found it pretty interesting to read.

One mistake that you believe everyone must avoid while preparing for PGMEE.

Wasting time looking for answers to controversial questions. Trust me its not that one question that will decide your rank but a 100 others. So utilize your time well.
