From 61% in MBBS to Rank 26 in DNB July 2016

PrepLadder congratulates Dr. Ayaz Saiyed on achieving this unbelievable feat. We wish him all the best for his career and future. In this exclusive interview with PrepLadder, he shares some tips to help you achieve this too.

Hello, please tell us something about yourself

My Name is Dr. Ayaz Saiyed My DNB CET July 2016 rank is 26.

What do you think is the correct approach to study for PGMEE? Only MCQs or Theory+MCQs?

One should focus on theory mainly, because exact repeats are very less in the exam these days. The questions are a little twisted and you can answer them only if your concepts are strong. MCQ practice is very important too. Mainly NBE pattern MCQs

When should the preparation ideally be started?

Ideally, a focused preparation should be started at the start of internship.

Please list the books you studied for each subject.

There are many books in market, so many students get confused and sometimes choose the wrong books, I would rather suggest that one should stick to the books which they have read once. Because multiple revisions of same content is the only key for success in PGMEE. Here are the books I used: For first year subjects - Across Pharmacology and Pathology - Garg Microbiology- Arora or Rachna Chaurasia any would do. Medicine- Mudit Khanna is the best. Surgery- Arvind Arora PSM - Vivek Jain is good but Arora is a better book. And for short subjects- SARP ENT, Opthal, Ortho- Arora's OOO. And last but not least get ur class notes should be on your tips, and for quick revision of all subject ROAMS is very good book.

Have you attempted PGMEE previously? If yes, what did you do different this year that lead to your success

Yes, I gave NBE exams in previous years but I wasn’t successful. All I did different this time is focused on the important subjects and topics. As a result, I managed my time better. Finally, multiple revision is only thing we require.

How big is the role of practice and revision while preparing for PGMEE and how much time should be dedicated for it?

One should seriously study at least 9-10 hours a day during preparation phase. Because PGMEE preparation is really a stressful thing, one should have patience and self confidence to get through. Remember, hard work always pays and its never too late to start preparing.

Did PrepLadder play a part in your success? If yes, how?

Of course PrepLadder had a role. I attempted PrepLadders All India DNB mock before my original DNB exam. I scored Rank 260 in that, that gave me confidence that I can do it.

Did you use a time table/study plan to keep your preparation on track?

Yes, I had made my own time table which I followed strictly in last 6 months.

Were you a topper or a mediocre student during MBBS?

Not at all a topper, I was an average student in my MBBS with aggregate of just 61%.

List the most difficult and easiest subjects for you.

I find Biochem, Anesthesia, Gen Surgery a bit difficult to remember. Rest were average. Fmt, Anat, PSM went quite easy.

One mistake that you believe everyone must avoid while preparing for PGMEE.

Try not to get easy questions marked wrong in the exam. Because silly mistakes in NBE exams take ur rank a far behind. The only way to avoid them is to practice. The more practice you do, the better.

Some last tips for our readers preparing for PGMEE?

Guys, just have patience, trust yourself and give ur best. For me ROAMS revision at the end was very useful. All d best to all of you.
