There is no denying that preparing for the FMGE while managing the demands of an internship can be pretty overwhelming. While your one leg is in long ward hours, clinical duties, and patient care, your other leg will always be worrying about the vast syllabus across 19 subjects, endless MCQs and the constant pressure to clear one of India’s toughest exams.
It is absolutely okay to feel stuck in the middle of this struggle. Everyone does. Most of the FMGE aspirants find this period exhausting.
But the good news is that success is not about studying for endless hours of study, it is defined by how effective your study hours are, no matter how few.
If you have the right balance of discipline, planning, and smart strategies, you can quite effectively manage your internship and FMGE prep without burning out.
In this blog, we are going to walk you through practical steps that you can easily apply to make it happen.
The ideology of studying for 12 hours or so daily is going to burden you and cause a very early burn out. Instead of setting unrealistic expectations that cause stress later, it’s always better to set the goals that you can achieve easily.
During the internship, it is advised that you aim for 3-4 focused hours on working days. On your off days or lighter shifts, these hours can be stretched to 6-8 hours. It’s always better to break your targets into small, achievable milestones. For instance, you can aim to finish one topic or solve 50 MCQs.
If you try studying after the duty hours, your brain might not retain more than half of the information because of the fatigue from the whole day. It is always better to wake up an hour or two earlier than usual and use your mornings for heavy study.
Early hours are usually free from distractions, giving you better focus for subjects that need deep understanding. You can reserve your evening for lighter tasks like revising notes or solving quick MCQs.
Covering all 19 subjects requires strategy.
When time is tight, prioritization is everything.
Revision is the backbone of FMGE prep.
Your body and mind are your greatest tools — protect them.

This plan is flexible. Adjust it based on your duty hours, but stick to the principle of consistency over intensity.
We understand that balancing an internship with FMGE prep can be pretty overwhelming. But, you can rest assured that with discipline and the right strategies, you can make it possible and as easy as a breeze.
Studying endlessly won’t take you nowhere. What you need to focus on is studying effectively. You know even if you study for 3 consistent hours and manage your time well, it can make a huge difference in your preparation.
It is advised that you use your weekends and breaks wisely, focus on high yield topics, and revise multiple times.
Most of all, make sure that you don’t let stress weigh you down. Everyone who's qualified FMGE once and is now practicing in India, once stood exactly where you are today. They also had duties, studies, and doubts to juggle. But with consistency, smart planning, and strong belief in their journey, they could do it and so can you.
