Subdural haematoma is a rare and serious condition where blood collects between the skull and the surface of the brain. This is usually caused due to head injury that might lead to bursting a blood vessel.

It occurs because of a tear in a blood vessel, most commonly a vein. and blood leaks out of the torn vessel into the space below the dura mater membrane layer. And, this space is called the subdural space because it is below the dura. Bleeding into this space is called a subdural hemorrhage.

Types

There are three types of subdural haematoma:

Acute

  • It is the most dangerous type of subdural hematoma
  • Its symptoms may appear right after a head injury, often within minutes to hours

Subacute

  • Its symptoms usually appear hours to days or even weeks after the head injury
  • It can occur with a concussion

Chronic

  • In chronic subdural haematoma, bleeding occurs slowly and symptoms may not appear for weeks or months
  • It can be caused even by minor head injuries

Symptoms

Some common symptoms of Subdural Haematoma includes the following:

  • Confusion and drowsiness
  • Slurred speech and unclear vision
  • Nausea and vomiting

Diagnosis

Subdural haematomas are diagnosed based on a person's medical history, symptoms and the results of a brain scan. The common diagnosis methods are:

  • Physical and Neurological exam
  • Computed Tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of your head

Treatment

For treating the larger subdural haematoma, the doctor performs decompression surgery. One or more holes are drilled in the skull to drain the blood.
