Subdural haematomas are diagnosed based on a person's medical history, symptoms and the results of a brain scan. The common diagnosis methods are:

  • Physical and Neurological exam
  • Computed Tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of your head

For treating the larger subdural haematoma, the doctor performs decompression surgery. One or more holes are drilled in the skull to drain the blood.

Although, sometimes the smaller hematomas don’t require surgical treatment. Bed rest, medications and observation may be all that is needed.
