Now that the FMGE results are out and you have the score you’ve been working so hard towards, you have to think about the next step as well. We understand qualifying FMGE is a huge milestone but it is not the final step.
If you wish to practice medicine in India, it is mandatory to complete a compulsory one-year internship in an NMC-recognised hospital.
This is typically the phase where most students wonder, What happens after FMGE? How do I apply for an internship? What documents do I need?
We know that these questions can be pretty overwhelming. But, don’t you fret. In this blog, we have broken down the entire process into clear steps so you know exactly what to do next.
Once NBE declares your result, you’ll need to collect your official FMGE pass certificate. This document is the foundation for everything that follows. Without it, you cannot apply for registration or internship.
Submit an application to your state’s DME requesting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for your internship. Attach your provisional registration acknowledgment and other required documents. It usually takes 3–6 working days for the DME to issue this NOC.
Submit the DME’s NOC along with your documents to the superintendent of the hospital where you wish to intern. The hospital will issue its approval (sometimes another NOC) for you to proceed.
In many states, you’ll also need a No Objection Certificate from your college and university. This involves submitting a letter, demand draft, and copies of your documents to the principal and registrar. These NOCs confirm that you’re eligible to complete internship in your chosen hospital.
Once you have the NOCs, go back to the DME to get the final internship order. This order officially allows you to start your internship. You may also need to submit an affidavit stating you won’t claim a stipend during the internship.
Submit the final DME order and documents to the hospital superintendent’s office to receive your posting schedule. This is your formal internship allotment, and from here, your one-year training begins.
You must complete a 12-month compulsory rotating internship in an NMC-recognized hospital. Only after finishing this internship can you apply for permanent registration and begin independent medical practice in India.
Qualifying FMGE is just the first step. At this point, the internship process might feel lengthy and daunting. But if you follow each step carefully and with the utmost precision, you can easily get closer to your dream of practicing Medicine in India.
Now that the results are out, you must not delay at all. Make sure that you begin the paperwork, track your applications, and secure your posting as soon as you can.
The earlier you get done with the process, the earlier you can start the internship and saunter confidently into your medical career.
