FMGE Internship 2025 – Approved Hospitals, Rules & Stipend Structure

If you wish to practice Medicine in India, qualifying FMGE is not your only challenge. That’s only the first step. The candidate must also undergo a Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship under the supervision of approved hospitals and colleges across India. 

This one-year internship is specifically designed to bridge the gap between foreign medical training and Indian Medical practice. This process ensures that graduates are ready to serve patients with the required clinical standards. 

What Do You Mean by the FMGE Internship?

The FMGE internship that also goes by the name of CRMI is a 12-month mandatory training for all the aspirants who qualified FMGE. The condition is that this internship must be completed within two years of passing the exam. 

The entire process is overseen by the National Medicine Commission that ensures the internships happen only in recognised institutions. 

During this internship period, the aspirants are expected to rotate through key Medical specialties including Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry, and others. This will help FMGs to gain hands-on-experience in patient care and hospital practices in India. 

Eligibility for FMGE Internship 2025

To apply for the internship, candidates must meet the following requirements:

• Qualify FMGE with a minimum of 150 out of 300 marks.
• Complete the internship within 2 years from the date of qualifying the exam.
• Submit required documents (such as Passport and Aadhaar Card) to the respective authorities.
• Follow the eligibility norms of the State Medical Council, which is responsible for allotting institutes.
• Allotment may be based on merit and availability of seats in recognized hospitals.

Rules & Guidelines for FMGE Internship 2025

The NMC has issued detailed rules to ensure the internship is transparent, fair, and supportive:

• Mandatory Training: FMGs must complete 12 months of internship to apply for permanent registration in India.
• Time Limit: The internship must be completed within 2 years of passing FMGE.
• Extension in Rare Cases: In special circumstances, the NMC may extend the duration up to 24 months.
• No Fees: Colleges and hospitals are not allowed to charge any fees for the internship.
• Stipend: FMGs will receive a stipend equal to Indian medical interns, as per state government rules.
• State Allotment: Internships are allotted by the State Medical Councils, not by personal request.
• No Domicile Restriction: FMGs can complete internships in any state or union territory, irrespective of domicile.

The Two-Year Internship Clause

In some cases, NMC guidelines require FMGs to undergo a two-year internship.

• First Year: Compensates for clinical exposure that might have been missed in foreign medical schools.
• Second Year: Considered equivalent to the regular Indian MBBS internship, and only during this year do interns receive a stipend.

This ensures FMGs develop a strong clinical foundation before independent practice.

FMGE Internship Stipend 2025

The stipend structure is managed by respective state governments. While there is no uniform national stipend, NMC has clearly directed that FMGs must be paid at par with Indian interns.

• Stipends vary between states, but the principle of equal pay for equal work applies.
• For the two-year internship, stipends are paid only in the second year.
• No internship fees can be charged, and all facilities available to Indian interns must also be provided to FMGs.

One-Time Relaxation for FMGs

To ease the transition for many FMGs, the NMC announced a one-time relaxation allowing internships in about 650 approved hospitals across India, including non-teaching facilities.

• This provision is temporary and valid only for a specific period as per the NMC circular.
• It ensures that FMGs are not left without opportunities to complete their internship in time.

Number of Approved Hospitals for FMGE Internship

As per the NMC’s released list, more than 670 hospitals across India are recognized for FMGE internships, offering around 23,000 seats.

Here’s a quick snapshot of availability:

• Maharashtra – 74 hospitals
• Uttar Pradesh – 72 hospitals
• Karnataka – 62 hospitals
• Rajasthan – 62 hospitals
• Gujarat – 49 hospitals
• Madhya Pradesh – 45 hospitals
• Punjab & Haryana (combined) – 42 hospitals
• Tamil Nadu – 40 hospitals
• West Bengal – 33 hospitals
• Andhra Pradesh – 30 hospitals
• Delhi – 21 hospitals

Even small states and union territories, such as Andaman & Nicobar, Tripura, Manipur, Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Nagaland, have at least one approved hospital. Specialized facilities such as Military Hospitals (15) and Railway Hospitals (27) are also included.

• B J Medical College, Ahmedabad (Gujarat)
• Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla (Himachal Pradesh)
• Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dehradun (Uttarakhand)

This list is not exhaustive—many more institutions across India are open for FMGs to apply.
