Desmoplastic Round Cell Tumors: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Desmoplastic tumors, also known as small round cell tumors, are a kind of cancer that usually begins in the abdomen. On rare occasions, this type of cancer may spread to other body parts.

Cell growths are the precursors of rare tumors called desmoplastic small round cell tumors. Most often, the growths start in the tissue lining the inside of the abdomen and pelvis. This lining tissue is known as the peritoneum. The organ-to-organism diffusion rate of the cancer cells is high. They could include the bladder, intestines, and liver.

Treatment Of Desmoplastic Round Cell Tumors

The course of treatment for a desmoplastic small round cell tumor depends on your unique situation. Your healthcare team considers various aspects, including the location of your cancer and if it has spread to other parts of your body. A variety of medicines are used to treat the majority of individuals with this type of cancer.

Surgery

The goal of surgery is to eradicate all of the cancer. If the cancer has spread to nearby organs, it might not be possible. In that scenario, your doctor may recommend chemotherapy in addition to strong drugs to first lessen the cancer.

If total removal is not possible, your surgeon may try to remove as much of the cancer as possible. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be recommended following surgery to completely remove any cancer cells.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs to destroy cancer cells. Before surgery, chemotherapy may be administered to lessen the malignancy. This makes surgical removal easier. Another alternative for getting rid of any potential postoperative cells is chemotherapy.

• Chemotherapy is given only to the abdomen: Desmoplastic tiny round cell tumors surrounding the abdominal organs can be directly treated with chemotherapy drugs. This section of the body is known as the peritoneal cavity. Chemotherapy drugs are heated and injected directly into the abdomen to particularly target this area. The drugs are taken out after a specified period. The procedure known as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is employed. After surgery, it can be a possibility.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy involves energy that comes from sources such as X-rays and protons. Radiation therapy involves you lying very motionless on a table while a machine rotates around you. 

When desmoplastic small round cell tumors affect the abdomen, radiation therapy can be utilized to kill cancer cells that remain after surgery.

If your cancer has spread to other areas of your body, radiation therapy may be an option to treat symptoms including pain.

Targeted Drug Therapy

Targeted therapy could be recommended if your cancer reappears after treatment. If your cancer has progressed to other body parts, it may also be offered.

 Your doctor may look at your cancer cells to assess the likelihood that targeted therapy drugs may be beneficial in treating your disease. Targeted therapy can be used in place of or in addition to chemotherapy.
