Abrasion: Types, Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, Prevention and Complications

An abrasion is a scratch on the skin. This is a slit in your skin from the rubbing away of your skin. It might bleed a little and cause pain. Friction from objects pressing or rubbing against your skin might result in an abrasion. Abrasion is most typically the result of accidental accidents. They just affect the outermost layers of your skin.

An abrasion is comparable to paint being stripped of an object with sandpaper. The abrasive surface of the sandpaper rubbing against the object removes layers of paint, just like an abrasion removes parts of your skin.

Types Of Abrasions 

There are three types of abrasions:

• Linear: Another term for a linear abrasion is a scratch. The pattern of skin damage is like lines. It occurs when your skin comes into contact with a thorn or other sharp object.
• Grazed: A brushed or grazed abrasion may occur when your skin rubs against or comes into touch with a rough surface. This kind of abrasion could cause serious harm to your skin. One such instance is a skinned knee.
• Patterned: A patterned abrasion can result from an object rubbing against or making forceful contact with your skin. The shape and size of the object your skin came into touch with match the location of the skin wound. Nails, for example, can get damaged from cat scratching. The cat's claws mirror the shape and size of the scratches it makes on your skin.

Causes Of Abrasions 

Friction is what leads to abrasion. Friction arises when an object or surface that is hard, uneven, or abrasive touches your skin. The following are common causes of abrasions:

• Falling onto a stone or gravel floor.
• A slide onto the home plate in baseball.
• A motorbike or bicycle that has fallen off a moving vehicle into the pavement can get road rash.
• Rubbing your skin against a carpeted or rough rug surface can cause carpet burns.

Symptoms Of Abrasions 

Among the signs of an abrasion are:

• Mild pain
• Bleeding
• Skin discoloration.
• There is a pink to clear fluid oozing from the wound.

An abrasion results from rubbing off parts of your skin. This might cause your injury to appear:

• Paler than your skin's natural tone
• Dark outside, often blood red
• Spotted or flecked
• Clear 
• Wet

The skin that has been scraped from an injury may collect in one spot and peel away from the abrasion area. When your skin heals, it will fall off naturally.

Your elbows and knees are among the bony regions of your body where abrasion symptoms are most prone to occur. Your skin might become abrased anywhere on it. Furthermore, the mouth (dental abrasion) and the eye (corneal abrasion) can sustain abrasions.

Diagnosis Of Abrasions 

A diagnosis from a medical practitioner is not required because the majority of abrasions are minor injuries that may be handled at home. If you have a serious injury or are in an accident, you may need medical assistance for a significant abrasion. If you have an abrasion, a medical expert will visually evaluate your wound. They will closely monitor the following during the examination:

• The abrasion's nature
• Form and dimensions
• Where it is on your body
• How deep into your skin is the wound?
• Whether there is debris or other material in your wound.

Your healthcare provider will take a thorough medical history during a physical examination. They will also ask you questions about your symptoms, like:

• When did the damage occur?
• Where did it happen?
• What caused the harm?
• Is pain present?

Treatment Of Abrasions 

Abrasions are attended to with the proper type of wound care. To finish this at home, do the following:

• Wash the wound carefully with soap and water.
• Use tweezers to remove any visible debris, including stones. Exercise caution when removing any debris. If there is a lot of debris in your wound, including numerous large pieces of glass or gravel, see the emergency room (ER); do not try to remove the material on your own.
• Sanitizing and drying the wound. Use a fresh washcloth for this.
• Apply an antibiotic ointment topically to prevent the wound from becoming infected.
• Apply a dressing or bandage to your wound. modest abrasions, like a linear abrasion less than 2 inches, may not require a bandage due to their modest size.
• Cleanse and protect the wound every day till it heals. Use a fresh bandage.

A medical expert may suggest tetanus injections or antibiotics for wounds related to animals. Because it is preventive, this kind of medication lessens your risk of getting sick. If any of these injuries occurred as a result of an animal bite or scratch, get medical attention right once.

Avoid picking at your wound while it's healing. It can be quite tempting to pick at your wound or remove any dead skin. These actions could make the wound worse and take longer to heal. When you pick at your injuries, you run the risk of introducing bacteria into the wound and getting an infection.

Prevention Of Abrasions 

Abrasion is most often caused by accidental accidents. You can lessen your likelihood of getting an abrasion by:

• Paying attention to your surroundings, especially when around animals, uneven ground, or sharp objects.
• Wearing clothing, equipment, or protective gear when working or participating in sports-related activities.
• Avoiding hazards including sharp items and uneven surfaces.
• Observe your body to prevent accidents or falls. If you're tired, take a nap, and don't push yourself to do something potentially dangerous.
• Removing potential risks for trips near busy walking areas.

Complications Of Abrasions 

The most common aftereffect of an abrasion is an infection. Symptoms of an infection include:

• Pain
• Swelling
• Yellow or hazy pus or foul-smelling fluid oozing from the wound.
• The wound that won't heal.
• High temperature

Since abrasions are the result of anything rubbing against your skin, debris, dirt, and other pollutants may get into your wound. If these contaminants are not completely cleaned, humans may become infected with bacteria from them.

If you encounter any symptoms associated with an infection, consult a medical practitioner. Untreated infections have the potential to become hazardous.
